Contract values range from $5,000 for individual document translation to $200 million for multi-year, multi-language interpretation programs supporting military operations and immigration proceedings. Federal translation contracts cover document translation, simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, court interpretation, intelligence translation, sign language services, and localization. Security clearances are required for most government translation work, with TS/SCI clearances needed for intelligence community linguists. Interpreters for immigration courts must be federally certified, and military linguists often require specialized testing through the Defense Language Proficiency Test. High-demand languages shift with geopolitical priorities but consistently include Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, and Pashto. The State Department's Office of Language Services and DoD's intelligence agencies maintain large translation workforces. Machine translation post-editing (MTPE) is an emerging requirement as agencies leverage AI tools.
