The Canadian federal government has committed to awarding at least 5% of federal contracts to Indigenous-owned businesses, making Indigenous procurement one of the most actively supported categories on CanadaBuys. PSPC administers the Procurement Strategy for Aboriginal Business (PSAB), which sets aside contracts for businesses owned by First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples. Contract values span from $5,000 to over $100 million across all industries. PSAB set-asides require that the business be at least 51% Indigenous-owned and controlled. Businesses must self-identify through the Indigenous Business Directory maintained by Indigenous Services Canada. Mandatory set-asides apply when the contract serves primarily Indigenous populations or when the estimated value is under $2 million in a region with sufficient Indigenous business capacity. Opportunities exist across virtually every sector, including construction, professional services, environmental remediation, IT, security, and facilities management. Joint ventures between Indigenous and non-Indigenous firms are also eligible. The federal government's commitment to reconciliation continues to expand Indigenous procurement targets, making this a growing market with strong policy support.
