Full Description
I. HOSPITAL CORPSMAN BASIC (HCB) COURSE. The HCB Course prepares enlisted sailors to function as entry-level medical technicians in fixed and non-fixed medical facilities, performing duties to provide quality emergency, nursing and primary care procedures. The graduates shall demonstrate: the ability to comprehend, evaluate and apply information relevant to the role of a Hospital Corpsman; technical proficiency in entry-level skills required to fulfill the role of a basic Hospital Corpsman; and personal and professional behavior consistent with the expectations of a Navy sailor. The HCB Course is an apprentice level curriculum that is grounded partly in the Emergency Medical Technician realm as well as generalized medicine and nursing skills. There is no civilian credentialing body or professional certification that encapsulates the scope and the role of a Navy Hospital Corpsman that can be used as a model for this course. The course provides requisite knowledge, as well as simulated and clinical training in various aspects of emergency, nursing, and primary care. Subjects include medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, Basic Life Support (BLS), Tactical, Combat, Casualty Care (TCCC) as well as various aspects of nursing and primary patient care. Outcome-based practice and safety techniques are emphasized throughout the course. The HCB Course provides enlisted sailors basic knowledge of emergency medicine and nursing care. Graduates are awarded the following Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC): Navy B-300-0010 Hospital Corpsman Basic (HM-0000) Navy B-300-0004 Hospital Corpsman Advanced Technical Field Course (HM-ATF-0000) This course consists of multiple courses delivered in a single phase which consists of knowledge and skills training. The contractor shall provide education and training through lecture, hands-on instruction and clinical practice, guided discussion, demonstration, e-learning materials, simulations, and skills laboratory practice. Practical and written examinations are used to assess students’ knowledge and skills. II. MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (MLT) COURSE . The MLT Course prepares graduates to function as entry-level medical laboratory technicians. The graduates shall demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply and evaluate information relevant to the role of the medical laboratory technician. They shall be technically proficient in all skills required to perform the duties of a laboratory technician and exhibit the desired ethical behaviors consistent with professional expectations for medical laboratory technicians. The MLT Course provides education and training in the major disciplines of the clinical laboratory to include: clinical chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, immunology, microbiology, parasitology, urinalysis, blood donor center operations, specimen collection and processing, and laboratory operations/management. Lectures, demonstrations, online materials, simulations, and laboratory practice are utilized throughout the course. This course provides graduates with knowledge and technical skills required to achieve medical laboratory technician entry-level competencies and meets basic requirements of the DoD Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program (CLIP). The course prepares the laboratory technician to perform laboratory procedures at a medical treatment facility (MTF) under the supervision of a qualified laboratory technician/technologist. The course is divided into 2 phases and culminates in college credits that may be applied towards an associate degree. The graduates are eligible to take national certification exams as medical laboratory technicians and are awarded the following skills/job identifier based on Branch of Service: Army: Military Occupational Specialty Code (68K) Navy: Navy Enlisted Classification Code (HM 8506) The MLT Course is divided into Phase 1 training and Phase 2 training and culminates in earning Military Occupational Specialty Code (68K) for US Army personnel and Enlisted Classification Code (HM 8506) for US Navy personnel. The MLT Course is a two (2) phase course comprised of multiple courses. Historical data: Classroom/laboratory maximum class size is limited to 32 students. There are 9 iterations per fiscal year (new classes start every 5 weeks). Course length is 53 weeks. The MLT course of study consists of 11 courses under Phase 1 (1,040-hour course); Phase 2 consists of 2 courses (1,080-hour course) and a field training exercise (24-hour training exercise). III. SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY (ST) COURSE . The ST Course prepares graduates to function as entry-level surgical technologists in fixed and deployable medical facilities, performing duties to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of surgical procedures.
