What Is BC Bid?

British Columbia's official public-sector procurement portal — what it covers, what registration costs (nothing), and how it fits alongside CanadaBuys.

Last verified: June 2026

BC Bid is the Province of British Columbia's official procurement marketplace — found at bcbid.gov.bc.ca — where provincial ministries and broader public sector organizations post contract opportunities and suppliers browse, register, and compete for them.

The current BC Bid application replaced the legacy system in 2022. It is government-operated (not a commercial aggregator like MERX), free to browse, and free to register on. Public users can view open opportunities, awarded contracts, and preliminary bid results without logging in.

What BC Bid Covers

BC Bid hosts opportunities from two main groups of buyers:

  • Provincial ministries — all core BC government procurement, from highway maintenance to IT services.
  • Broader public sector (BPS) — health authorities, school districts, post-secondary institutions, Crown corporations, and many municipalities that choose to post there.

Municipal coverage is meaningful but not complete: some BC cities and regional districts also (or instead) use CivicInfo BC, BidsAndTenders, or their own procurement pages. If you target BC municipal work, monitor more than one source.

Public (no account)FreeBrowse open opportunities, view awarded contracts and preliminary bid results
Registered supplier (Business BCeID)FreeOpportunity shortlists, email notification subscriptions, manage and submit electronic bids

Unlike the legacy BC Bid system (which historically charged for e-bidding access), the current portal's supplier registration and e-bidding features are free — you just need a Business BCeID, the BC government's standard business login. Individual opportunities define their own submission methods, so always check whether a specific tender requires electronic submission, hard copy, or both.

How BC Bid Relates to CanadaBuys

BC Bid and CanadaBuys are parallel systems for different levels of government. A federal office in Vancouver buying services posts on CanadaBuys; a BC ministry buying the same services posts on BC Bid. There is no automatic cross-listing.

Practically, a BC-based supplier should watch both — plus municipal sources. That is three or more portals with separate logins and notification systems, which is exactly the fragmentation problem covered in our guide to finding Canadian tenders.

To be clear about the division of labour: GovBid is for discovery. When you find a BC opportunity you want to pursue, you register and submit on BC Bid (or whichever portal the buyer specifies) — bidding always happens on the official source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BC Bid free?

Yes. Browsing opportunities on BC Bid does not require an account, and supplier registration is free — you register with a Business BCeID. Registered suppliers can create opportunity shortlists, subscribe to notifications, and submit electronically where the opportunity supports it.

Do I need a BCeID to use BC Bid?

You need a Business BCeID only to register as a supplier — for shortlists, notification subscriptions, and electronic submissions. Browsing open opportunities, viewing awarded contracts, and reading preliminary bid results are available publicly without any login.

Does BC Bid include municipal tenders?

Partially. BC Bid hosts opportunities from provincial ministries and broader public sector organizations — health authorities, school districts, post-secondary institutions, Crown corporations — and many BC municipalities also post there. But some municipalities use their own portals or platforms like CivicInfo BC and BidsAndTenders, so BC Bid alone is not complete municipal coverage.

Is BC Bid the same as CanadaBuys?

No. CanadaBuys is the federal Government of Canada portal; BC Bid is the Province of British Columbia's portal. A federal contract for work located in BC appears on CanadaBuys, not BC Bid. Suppliers targeting BC typically need to watch both.

Can companies from outside BC bid on BC Bid opportunities?

Generally yes. Under the Canadian Free Trade Agreement, most provincial procurement above thresholds is open to suppliers from other provinces. Individual opportunities state their own eligibility terms, so always check the tender documents.
