Each month, we publish a snapshot of the government contracting market using live data from our platform. This report covers what posted in April 2026, what's open now in late May, and where the opportunities are concentrated — heading into a regulatory inflection point in June.

The volume picture going into June is shaped by two converging pressures. On the Canadian side, the June 15, 2026 Buy Canadian threshold drop brings federal procurements as low as C$5M into the Canadian-preference evaluation regime. On the US side, the Revolutionary FAR Overhaul Phase 2 work continues — the formal rulemaking that turns Phase 1 class deviations into permanent FAR text — with the next wave of changes clustering in summer 2026.

Top industries by new tenders (April 2026)

Construction [VERIFY: founder] [VERIFY: founder]%
Architecture & Engineering [VERIFY: founder] [VERIFY: founder]%
Manufacturing [VERIFY: founder] [VERIFY: founder]%
Transportation & Logistics [VERIFY: founder] [VERIFY: founder]%

Professional services continues to set the pace — management consulting, IT advisory, staffing, and program management dominate the federal pipeline. This is the broadest single category and the easiest entry point for small businesses with specialized expertise.

Construction and Architecture & Engineering remain the bedrock of federal infrastructure spending. A&E volume is a leading indicator for construction tenders 6–12 months downstream — design work awarded now drives construction RFPs in late 2026 and 2027.

For manufacturing firms, Buy American requirements continue to favor domestic producers. The Canadian-side equivalent — the Policy on Prioritizing Canadian Materials — applies to defence and construction procurements ≥ C$25M and is part of the broader Buy Canadian framework.

Top sources by volume

Source New Tenders Coverage
New York City (NYC) [VERIFY: founder] Municipal + agency procurement
SAM.gov [VERIFY: founder] All US federal agencies
SEAO (Quebec) [VERIFY: founder] Quebec provincial procurement
CanadaBuys [VERIFY: founder] Government of Canada federal
CivicInfo BC [VERIFY: founder] BC municipal

SAM.gov is the primary federal source on the US side and the one most affected by the February 2026 consolidation — FPDS and eSRS are now both inside SAM.gov, and the search interface is the canonical place to do federal contract-award research. See the FAR Overhaul + SAM.gov Consolidation guide for what changed.

On the Canadian side, CanadaBuys is the federal portal where every Buy Canadian–subject solicitation flows through, including attestation requirements and Canadian Value-Added commitments.

Top Canadian provinces by open tenders

Saskatchewan [VERIFY: founder]
Alberta [VERIFY: founder]

Quebec through SEAO continues to lead by raw volume, capturing both provincial and Quebec-municipal procurement. Ontario's Ontario Tenders Portal (OTP), Supply Ontario, and the MASH sector together represent the country's largest sub-federal procurement market by spend. British Columbia, captured through CivicInfo BC, is heavy in construction, engineering, and local government services.

Award data: what's been won

Metric Value
Total awards tracked [VERIFY: founder]
Median award value [VERIFY: founder]

The median award value is the most useful single benchmark for small businesses deciding which opportunities to pursue. Half of all awards fall below this threshold — these are often the contracts most accessible to small businesses bidding for the first time. See our how-to-bid-first guide for entry-level strategies.

Contracts under the US simplified acquisition threshold of US$350,000 use streamlined procedures — faster evaluations, less paperwork, and more opportunities reserved for small businesses. The Canadian equivalent — once the Buy Canadian threshold drops to C$5M on June 15 — brings the Canadian supplier discount and Canadian Value-Added evaluation rules into a much wider band of federal awards.

What to watch in June 2026

June 15: Buy Canadian threshold drops to C$5M. This is the single most consequential procurement-policy change of 2026 on the Canadian side. Federal procurements ≥ C$5M in five strategic sectors (defence and security; health and pharmaceutical; infrastructure, construction, and transportation; ICT; consumer and industrial goods) become subject to the 10% Canadian supplier discount and up to 25% Canadian Value-Added evaluation weight. See the threshold drop guide for the full mechanics.

Spring 2026 launch window for the SMB Procurement Program. Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) is expected to operationalize the C$79.9M Small and Medium Business Procurement Program during spring 2026. Watch for the program announcement and eligibility criteria — see the SMB Program guide for what's confirmed so far.

FAR Overhaul Phase 2 deadlines cluster mid-year. The Revolutionary FAR Overhaul continues to roll out class deviations and move toward permanent rulemaking. Specific final-rule dates are agency-specific [VERIFY: founder — check acquisition.gov/far-overhaul/announcements for any agency-specific June deadlines relevant to your business].

Canadian fiscal year is one quarter in. Federal Canadian departments are roughly 25% through fiscal year 2026–27. The pace of solicitations typically picks up across Q2 and Q3 as departments deploy committed budgets.

US Q3 spending acceleration. The US federal fiscal year ends September 30. Q3 (April–June) historically shows accelerating procurement volume as agencies push to avoid year-end rushes.

CMMC continues to integrate. CMMC 2.0 certification requirements remain in effect for DoD contractors handling Controlled Unclassified Information. Certified firms continue to face less competition — early-mover advantage hasn't closed yet.

The bottom line

The May 2026 market is set up by two transitions hitting in June: Canadian threshold drop expanding the Canadian-preference zone, and the FAR Overhaul Phase 2 work continuing on the US side. Volume across both markets remains strong, with professional services, construction, and A&E continuing to dominate.

For Canadian suppliers, the move to make is preparing Canadian Value-Added commitments and verifying the Canadian supplier definition test for any contract you might bid on in the $5M+ band after June 15. For US small businesses, audit your proposal templates against current FAR clause numbers and confirm your SAM.gov registration handles the subcontracting-plan workflow that replaced eSRS in February.
